On-campus halls are usually the safest first-year choice: shorter contracts, everything included in one payment, and easiest to book from India before you arrive. They're also usually the most expensive per month and the least flexible if your plans change.
Private student residences sit in between — often newer and better located than university halls, with flexible lease lengths, but pricier and more common in bigger cities than smaller university towns.
Shared apartments are typically the cheapest option and give you the most independence, but require being on the ground (or having someone view the place for you) to avoid scams, and usually mean a 12-month lease with limited exit flexibility.
