  • Loans typically start from around ₹7.5 lakh and can extend beyond ₹1 crore depending on the collateral offered and the applicant's repayment profile.
  • Public sector education loan options

Overview

Canara Bank runs more than one scheme to fund overseas education, the two most relevant being the IBA Model Education Loan Scheme (for general higher studies abroad) and the Vidya Sagar / Education Loan Scheme for Pursuing Master's Degree (aimed at students admitted to top-ranked global universities, particularly for STEM postgraduate programs). The loans are designed to be comprehensive, covering tuition fees, living and accommodation costs, travel expenses, study material, and insurance premiums for the duration of the course. Because the interest rate is floating and tied to the bank's benchmark lending rate, the effective rate a student pays can shift over the loan tenure in line with RBI policy changes. Under the Master's-focused scheme, at least half the loan amount typically needs to be backed by collateral, with full collateral cover unlocking the most competitive rates.

Eligibility

Student eligibility:

  • Must be an Indian national with a confirmed offer of admission from a recognised foreign university or institution.
  • Should have completed the relevant prior qualification (10+2 or a bachelor's degree, depending on the course applied for) with a reasonably consistent academic record.
  • Generally expected to be within a typical age band (commonly cited as 18–35 years), though this can vary by scheme.
  • Qualifying scores in entrance or language tests such as GRE, GMAT, IELTS, TOEFL, or SAT, where applicable to the course.

Co-applicant eligibility:

  • A co-applicant (usually a parent, guardian, spouse, or close blood relative) is compulsory.
  • The co-applicant needs a stable, verifiable source of income, which becomes the primary basis of assessment for loans sanctioned without collateral.
  • For secured loans above the collateral-free threshold, the co-applicant's financial standing is assessed alongside the value and legal status of the collateral offered.

Course and institution eligibility:

  • Covers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, diploma, and select professional courses at institutions recognised or accredited by the relevant educational authority in that country.

Documents required

From the student:

  • Duly filled loan application form and passport-size photographs
  • Valid passport (and visa, once available)
  • Admission proof such as the offer letter, I-20, or CAS
  • Mark sheets/certificates for prior qualifications (10th, 12th, and graduation, as applicable)
  • Entrance/language test scorecards (GRE, GMAT, IELTS, TOEFL, etc.)
  • Statement of course fees and cost estimate from the institution
  • KYC documents — identity proof (Aadhaar/PAN/Voter ID) and address proof
  • Scholarship letter, if any

From the co-applicant:

  • Photographs, identity and address proof
  • Income proof — salary slips, Form 16, and IT returns for salaried applicants; IT returns and business financials for self-employed applicants
  • Bank statements for the last six months

Collateral documents (for loans above the collateral-free limit):

  • Property title deed, encumbrance certificate, and tax receipts, along with a bank-approved valuation report, or
  • Fixed deposit receipts, NSC/KVP certificates, or an assignable life insurance policy, as applicable

It's advisable to keep multiple self-attested photocopies of every document, with certified translations for any paperwork not in English.

Repayment

  • A moratorium period is provided, generally covering the full course duration plus a further six months to a year after course completion (or on securing employment, whichever comes first). No EMI is due during this period, though interest typically continues to accrue.
  • Once the moratorium ends, repayment through EMIs begins and can be spread over a tenure of up to 15 years, depending on the loan amount and scheme.
  • Since the interest rate is floating, the EMI amount may be revised periodically if the bank's benchmark rate changes.
  • Part-prepayment and full foreclosure are generally allowed without penalty, letting borrowers reduce interest outgo by repaying ahead of schedule.
  • Interest paid during the loan tenure may be eligible for a tax deduction under Section 80E of the Income Tax Act.

How to apply

Apply → document verification → credit decision → sanction → disbursal.

  • Choose your application route — either the government-backed Vidya Lakshmi Portal (recommended for faster, more transparent processing) or a visit to your nearest Canara Bank branch.
  • Online (Vidya Lakshmi Portal): Register as a student, fill out the Common Education Loan Application Form (CELAF), select Canara Bank as your preferred lender, upload the required academic, financial, and admission documents, and submit. The portal forwards your application to the bank for processing.
  • Offline (branch visit): Collect the education loan application form at the branch, fill in course, university, and financial details, and submit it along with the student, co-applicant, and (if applicable) collateral documents.
  • Verification: The bank reviews your admission and academic profile, assesses the co-applicant's income and repayment capacity, evaluates any collateral offered, and checks credit history (CIBIL score).
  • Sanction: On approval, a sanction letter is issued detailing the loan amount, interest rate, margin, and repayment terms. Both borrower and co-borrower need to sign the loan agreement.
  • Disbursement: Funds are typically released directly to the university in line with the fee schedule, with living-expense components credited to the student's account as needed.
